Dark towers of Sanction beneath a fiery volcanic sky

Sanction, Beneath the Lords of Doom

A red glow rises from the lava beneath a stone bridge. At the harbor, sailors pick their way across weathered boards while cargo passes between ships and crowded streets. Beyond the docks, soldiers, merchants, and laborers move through a city that has learned to live with danger overhead and underfoot.

This is Sanction: a volcanic port where trade, ambition, and the unfinished business of war offer an adventurer plenty of reasons to stay alert.

A city shaped by fire and war

Sanction stands at the eastern end of the New Sea, surrounded by volcanic mountains. Above it loom the Lords of Doom, whose eruptions and lava have helped shape the city's fortunes. Its harbor connects it to the wider world, but the mountains and the city's troubled history give Sanction a character all its own. Sanction lore

The War of the Lance ended only a few years ago. Sanction was an important center of Dragonarmy operations, and in the MUD that influence remains visible in its officers, banners, temples, and military administration. Defeat elsewhere has not made its streets a refuge for everyone. Power still matters here, and the people who hold it expect their orders to be obeyed.

For characters drawn to the Dragonarmies, mercenary service, or the pursuit of influence, Sanction offers a very different home from Palanthas. For others, it is a place to enter with a clear purpose and a careful choice of allies.

Begin at the Central Plaza

The Central Plaza remains the heart of Sanction, though its cracked and stained marble has seen better days. Around it, the city carries on: officials handle military business, merchants seek customers, and people hurry between errands beneath the gaze of those in authority.

New adventurers may find work with Sergeant Zock Deress, a formidable bozak draconian with little patience for hesitation. His assignments provide a way into Sanction's military world, but his expectations are harsh. Some early orders involve violence against the city's poorest inhabitants. Service here can mean taking part in the cruelty that keeps its rulers in power.

Those willing to continue will find that routine duties soon lead beyond the plaza. Reports, investigations, and dangerous errands draw recruits deeper into the city's interests—and into places where even their superiors do not have all the answers.

Explore Sanction

The harbor and commercial streets

Sanction's rough docks are busy with ships carrying goods across the New Sea. Traders and sailors pass along the piers throughout the day, giving the waterfront a restless energy. It is a useful place to begin a journey, look for opportunity, or watch the movement of a city dependent on its port.

Away from the water, the business district offers equipment and provisions. Shops such as Drax's Weapons and More, Kalkar's Armor Emporium, and the Common Goods Company help adventurers prepare for the road. Other merchants cater to more specialized needs, from archery supplies to magical goods.

The Bazaar of Sanction brings different customers together among colorful tents and stalls. Whatever their loyalties, most people here understand the attraction of a profitable exchange.

The Inn of the Chromatic Dragon

The Inn of the Chromatic Dragon is one of Sanction's most prominent meeting places. Its long history and substantial presence make it a recognizable destination in a city where so much bears the marks of conflict.

Travelers, adventurers, and people with business to discuss pass through its doors. It offers a different pace from the harbor and the administrative offices, though a conversation in Sanction can carry obligations long after the cups have been cleared.

Lava bridges and the slums

Stone bridges cross the lava that cuts through the city. Their red-lit spans are part of daily life for guards and residents, but they also make the dangers of Sanction impossible to ignore.

Beyond the busiest streets lie poorer neighborhoods of narrow lanes, muddy paths, and worn houses. These districts show the cost of living beneath powerful masters. Not everyone in Sanction is a schemer or a soldier; many are simply trying to survive another day.

Exploring the city means seeing both its opportunities and the people left outside them.

Temples and the Black Moon

The Chapel of Takhisis makes the Dark Queen's presence unmistakable. Its altar and shifting dragon imagery belong to a city whose faith and military history are closely entangled.

Elsewhere, the Sanctum of the Black Moon offers a place devoted to Nuitari, with dark stone, magical wards, and a view of the night sky. For a character interested in the darker paths of magic, Sanction has places where such interests need not remain hidden.

The wider region also holds imposing temple complexes. Their names may be familiar from the histories of the war, but approaching them is an adventure rather than a casual excursion from the shops.

Below the city

Sanction's sewers lead away from the crowded streets into a less familiar world. Clearing vermin may sound like ordinary work, but the tunnels and hidden routes beneath the city offer reasons to prepare carefully before descending.

Deeper underground, the MUD also allows adventurers to encounter the world of the Shadowpeople. Their caverns, cultivated fungi, and communal spaces reveal a way of life far removed from the military bustle above. These reclusive cave-dwellers have their own people to care for and their own reasons to ask for help.

The underground is not simply an extension of Sanction's streets. Treat its inhabitants and its dangers as discoveries in their own right.

Sanction has extensive services for adventurers, including those who prefer to earn their living through craft and trade.

The crafting district has a personality of its own. At Bubblewerkz, the goblins' alchemical work has left its marks across the pumice surfaces. Nearby workshops serve more familiar trades, while the supply-order office puts materials and finished goods into circulation.

Musicians can visit The Bard's Retreat, and those seeking help on the road can look into the Hidden Knife mercenaries. Sanction rewards preparation: the right tools, equipment, and companions may matter as much as confidence.

Follow the orders—and the questions

Sanction's adventure paths begin with the demands of its officers, then reach into investigations, outlying settlements, underground threats, and magical intrigue.

Adjutant Sina Rosa brings another kind of work into that military structure. Some assignments require attention to people and evidence, not simply a willingness to fight. Troubling events in the city can take adventurers from a shopkeeper's doorway to places far beyond the walls.

Other work leads toward Snow Wood Convent, a Rogue Encampment, and the mysteries associated with Nuitari's Spike. These destinations give Sanction a reach beyond its harbor and plaza. You may return with a report, a reward, or a better understanding of how little your employers chose to tell you.

The stories are yours to uncover. Bring supplies, listen to instructions, and consider who benefits from the work you accept.

Find your place in Sanction

A Dragonarmy veteran may see an opportunity to regain standing. A mercenary may care more about payment than old banners. A wizard may seek knowledge unavailable in more welcoming company, while a craftsperson finds customers who need their equipment repaired, replaced, and improved.

Sanction is available as a hometown and serves as the MUD's Dragonarmy-aligned city. Its appeal lies in that difficult setting: a place where ambition has room to grow, loyalties are tested, and the consequences of the war remain close at hand.

Above it all, the Lords of Doom continue to burn. The city beneath them has no shortage of work for those prepared to answer.

Setting note: This guide presents Sanction in the early years after the War of the Lance. Later rulers and transformations of the city are not treated as its present. The MUD adapts Dragonlance with its own characters, services, and adventures.
